We are just days away from the first cross country race for many high school athletes and I wanted offer a little advice for those of you who might be racing for the first time:
1. Don't go out as fast as you can, remember that you will have to keep this pace for several miles. It is much smarter to go out conservatively and then pick up the pace as the race goes on.
2. Don't eat anything out of the ordinary in the hours before the race. I would also recommend not to eat anything for at least three hours before to avoid stomach upset.
3. Cross country spikes can help you reach your time goals faster. They are lighter than training shoes and are specially designed for improved grip and traction on the cross country course.
4. Don't forget to have fun!
Once you have raced once, you'll have a clearer picture of what you want to accomplish in your future racing and hopefully continue to improve your best time, which is often referred to as a PR (personal record) or PB (personal best).!
Wishing you all a great season and many happy miles of running in-between!
